Ainmníodh an scoil i ndiaidh Naomh Faithleann a bhunaigh mainistir ar Oileán Inis Faithleann sa seachtú h-aois. Scríobhadh Annála Inis Faithlinn anseo idir 940A.D. agus 1321A.D. Tá na h-ánnála anois sa Leabharlann Bodleian, Oxford.

Ar shuaitheantas na scoile seasann an leabhar agus an cleite le h-aghaidh na h-ánnála. Tagann an t-ainm CILL AIRNE ό thorthaí an Draighean; airní. Taispeánann an géag 3 airne.

Tá trí cinn ann ag taispeáint an 3 loch i gCill Airne. Tá dath dubh-chorcha ar airní agus tá sé seo le feiscint ar dhath na h-éadaí scoile.

School History

Gaelscoil Faithleann opened in 1989 as a result of a joint working group of local parents and members of Conradh na Gaeilge. The school was located for ten years at Brú na Pairce. We moved into our new building in 1999. This building is located at The Park, Killarney, a beautiful woodland area that used to be the pheasentry of the Kirkpatick family who lived in Park House at the start of the 20th century.

We celebrated the schools twentieth birthday during the 2009 -2010 school year. On September 14th 2009 over 250 people went to Innisfallen Island for a family day and mass.

A dinner dance was held on March 12th 2010 with past and present pupils, parents, staff and Board of Management members attending. This date was exactly twenty years from when The Department of Education recognised the school.

The school name and crest

The school is named after Saint Faithleann who founded a monastery on Innisfallen Island in the seventh century. The Annals of Innisfallen were written here between 940 A.D. and 1321 A.D.. These annals are now in The Bodleian Library in Oxford. The school crest shows the Annals of Innisfallen through the book and quill.

The meaning of CILL AIRNE is the Church of the Sloe. The branch shows the blackthorn tree with three sloes.

The three sloes represent the three lakes in Killarney. The school uniform of purple represents the colour of the sloe fruit.
